Ohio Roller Girls Feature: Drrty Grrl

Ohio Roller Girls - Drrty Grrl

Q1: How did you get into started with the Ohio Roller Girls? How long have you been skating?
A: Ohio Roller Girls had a booth set up at the 'Extreme Sports Expo' at the beginning of 2006. I walked over to talk to them to see when they would be playing next so I could check them out and see what they were all about. When I asked when they would be having an event, they asked if I'd be interested in joining. I told them I would love to! Only I had no idea what they really did. So they explained roller derby to me. I went to a practice a few nights later, and i was HOOKED! I officially joined the league in February 2006. This is my 3rd season with the Ohio Roller Girls.

Q2: What position do you play?
A: My main position is jammer. I'm one of two skaters that lines up behind the whole pack and I wear a helmet cover with a star on both sides. My main objective is to get through the pack legally to try to establish lead jammer, then each additional pass I score points on every member of the opposing team I pass legally. I've been working my way into the pack as a blocker to gain better understanding of the game, but my heart is at the jammer line.

Q3: What makes you tougher than the next girl?
A: I can take a mad hit from an opposing player and maybe even get knocked down from time to time, but I get up and keep skating.

Q4: How many tattoos do you have?
A: Five total. I have the Ohio Roller Girls logo tattoed on my right forearm; I have my derby name: drrty grrl tattoed on the back of my thighs; I have the word 'real' tattoed on my left wrist (to remind me to keep it real at all times); and I have a couple of Kanji pieces.

Q5: Where do you get your ink?
A: Since I moved to Columbus, I've gotten my ink done at Evolved by Anna Banana aka: Donna de la Muerte, who is also an Ohio Roller Girl.

Q6: Any plans for future tattoos?
A: Absolutely!! I have an idea for a sleeve that involves the statue of liberty with a pair of roller skates slung over her shoulder. I'm also getting my dog's paw prints put on my chest in her memory.

Q7: When you're not kicking ass in the rink, what are you up to?
A: Studying my ass off!! I've been taking classes again, and I just got accepted into the Veterinary Technician Program here at Columbus State. I'll start the program full-time this fall, which means I'll graduate in two years as a certified veterinary technician.

Q8: Roller girls have a tough girl/pinup girl tough and sexy quality to them - does that carry over into your life outside the rink as well as inside the rink? If so, how?
A: Sure! For starters, having a roller girl logo where everyone can see it generates curiosity and conversation. And since I became a roller girl, I feel like I'm part of something sexy and badass.. and I'm definately proud of it.. all the time!

Q9: How can we find out more about drrty grrl and the Band of Brawlers? Do you have a website or myspace to share with your fans?
