Q1: How did you get into started with the Ohio Roller Girls? How long
have you been skating?
A: I've been with the Ohio Roller Girls even before it was the Ohio Roller Girls! I am the founder of the league J I've been skating for only 4 years, when the league first started.
Q2: What position do you play?
A: I'll play any position. Although I usually play Outside or Tail in the pack.
Q3: What makes you tougher than the next girl?
A: As the founder of the league I've had to deal with a lot of tough situations, which has only made me stronger and more hungry to play and kick ass at this sport!
Q4: How many tattoos do you have?
A: Gosh, too many to count! I have a full sleeve on my left arm, half sleeve on my right arm, a few on my back, one on my right ankle by Mario Desa.
Q5: Where do you get your ink?
A: Durb has done all the work on my arms, random artists on my back, and Mario Desa did the skull on my ankle.
Q6: Any plans for future tattoos?
A: Yes, when I have some time!! I plan on getting the OHRG logo and getting my right sleeve finished. Not sure what I want to get though. Probably something related to roller derby. Roller derby has made a huge impact on me and has completely changed my life, so a roller derby related tattoo would have a lot of meaning to me.
Q7: When you're not kicking ass in the rink, what are you up to?
A: Roller derby has pretty much become my life and is like a second job. From going to practices, events and meetings to working out outside of the rink. But, when I'm not doing anything roller derby related, I work full time in a hospital lab- I play with blood and bodily fluids for a living.
Q8: Roller girls have a tough girl/pinup girl tough and sexy quality to
them - does that carry over into your life outside the rink as well as
inside the rink? If so, in what way does it affect your outside life?
A: Roller derby has given me more self confidence in myself. This league has come so much further than I have ever imagined. When I decided to start the league 4 years ago I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Everything I have gone through to get this league started has made me a better and tougher person. So those qualities I have learned along the way definitely transfer over in my outside life. I take the attitude that I can do anything and apply it to my life outside the rink.
Q9: How can we find out more about Scarlette Fury and the Take-Outs? Do
you have a website or myspace to share with your fans?
A: You can check out my player profile on the website here: http://www.ohiorollergirls.com/site/Teams_Staff/Takeouts/scarletteFury.html - And my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/scarlettefury
Q10: You're the League Founder! What influenced your drive to bring the
Ohio Roller Girls into being? Have you always been into Roller Derby?
A: I hadn't always been into roller derby. I found out about the resurgence of roller derby that was going on through a friend's myspace page. I started looking into roller derby and had the crazy idea to start a league here in Columbus. I just thought it sounded like fun and wanted to skate! I started contacting people in Texas and joined a yahoo group called the United Leagues Coalition (which later became the WFTDA!). There were women from all over the US on this group supporting each other and helping out new leagues, like myself, get started. So in the beginning it was just me doing research on how to get the league started. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was definitely A LOT of work in the beginning, but totally worth all that work. There are no words to describe how it makes you feel when someone tells you that you have changed their life b/c you brought roller derby into their lives.
Q11: You've got a lot of girls involved in the Ohio Roller Girls, and
we're seeing an increase in awareness and involvement in Roller Derby
around the Midwest. Where do you see in the future for your organization?
A: This is only the beginning. The resurgence of this sport has only been going on for about 5 years, so it's still relatively young. The future of the Ohio Roller Girls looks very bright. One of our goals is to increase our national rankings. Our travel team has been working hard and hopes to finally take home some wins this June at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza (http://www.myspace.com/ecextravaganza). We are also nearing the end of our third home season and will be having try-outs to accept our third rookie class! There are so many amazing, strong, beautiful women who belong to this organization and that's what keeps me going and makes me proud to call myself an Ohio Roller Girl!
